How to Find the Right Message during Challenging Times
In the wake of the untimely death of Kevin Samuels (Youtuber and Imagine consultant), there have been a lot of conversations about the importance of the messenger over the message.
In a world of 24hr media and a week of opinions, how do you filter the noises? Or better yet, can one ever separate the person from the message? In this episode of the Financial Griot Podcast, the crew discuss the merit of the message over the messenger.

The Good and Bad Messages
Firstly, we have to re-learn how to hear a message before deciding if it’s good or bad.
People who are good listeners are more likely to retain information, understand what’s being required of them, and ask the right questions. This is a valuable skill in group projects and meetings. Many people think they need to talk a lot to contribute, but listening is arguably more important. (The Important Site, 10 reasons why listening is important)
Turns out, people have an acute awareness of when you aren’t listening or seeing them. According to a 2020 study by Emtrain,ย 1 in 10 employees say they do not trust that their leaders would listenย if they made a complaint. This results in employees suffering and not feeling supported, which affects their performance.ย (Better Up, The importance of listening as a leader in the digital era)
Beyond listening we all need DISCERNMENT
People with discernment are able to make keen observations on context, subtext and intent of a message.
Gaining discernment takes time; it’s an ability granted off of wisdom or experience. Discernment is intentionally confrontational and forces you to make a judgment call. For example, it takes discernment to accurately judge someone’s character.
The goal is to listen to the good and the bad, but most important learning to take away the key pieces. No one is perfect and no message will resonate every time, but to quote Eddie Griffith “did you get the message?”
As such, did you understand the lesson and how it can affect you? Agree to Disagree?
No matter where you lean in the conversation our interpersonal issues spread to our financial ones, This is why I wrote about having financial discernment. In the age of the get rich quick, good messages get steam rolled by fraud and scams.
