Turns Out, There is No Such Thing as Work-Life Balance
In this episode of the Financial Griot, the crew discusses work-life balance or lack there of. The last few months have been tough and filled with challenges. As the world reopens, so do competing interests. From dates, brunches and events, it’s draining.
Ironically, it’s kinda of always been this way.

The Enduring Cycle of Working to Spend
“Life’s challenges are both necessary and unavoidable on the path of changes.”
Not going to lie to you, it’s HARD. You have to learn and adapt to beat the odds. In short, work-life balance is the pursuit of equilibrium. People prioritizes the demands for monetary gain, social success and personal life.
Most people are living paycheck to debt. It’s likely that they would favor time-rich activities, if money wasn’t an issue.
As such, work-Life balance is an enduring cycle, not an achievement nor the finish line.
Studies and Research on Post Pandemic Work-Life Balance
To explore the idea, researchers reviewed 200 in-depth interviews with 78 professionals. They found that the majority described their jobs as highly demanding, exhausting and chaotic. Respondents felt that working long hours, was integral to their success.
Specifically, about 30% of men and 50% of women consciously resisted working long hours. There was a general unease with the tradeoff of time and personal life.
While each person differed, the study suggests that the world is changing. The pandemic interrupted labor markets, and triggered decentralized working environments.
The “new normal,” post-pandemic, will require flexible work arrangements. This will challenge traditional relationships with employees and employers, remote working hours, work–life balance and the relationship of individuals.
Seeking Purpose that creates a Balanced Life
A healthy lifestyle is essential to coping with stress.
Even outside of work-life balance, you need to understand your purpose and moral center in life. Some of the core tenants are simple: Eat well, work out, get enough sleep. Others are more elusive like making an impact, making the most of your day, creating enriching networks.
In the end, this doesn’t have to be another task. Just way to live. Most importantly with the weight of the world on your shoulders, just aim to relax and find gratefulness in small things.
